A coach for the National Team

Czech Basketball Federation officially announced that ZVVZ USK Prague's coach, Lubor Blazek, will be coaching the Czech National team for the next World Championship which is going to take place in Czech Republic.

Atomeromu-Szekszard inflicted on Szolnoki their sixth loss of the season, which allows Atomeromu to rank just above them in the standings. Szolnoki didn't manage to enter in the game as they were down by 16pts already at the half time. They just offered better resistance in the third quarter but were unable to keep up with their opponent.

It was the matchup of the new-comers of this Euroleague competition and Rivas didn't make any gift to Gorzow by defeating them 85-60. Rivas led from the beginning to the end and outrebounded their opponent, well helped by Gorzow low shooting average (37% at two-point shots, 33.3% at three-point shots for Gorzow and 54.5% and 47.4% respectively for Rivas).

Last game of Group B

Schio showed they didn't want to repeat their bad performance of last season in the Euroleague competition and defeated Pecs on their home court 55-58 thanks to Laura Macchi's three-pointer hit 9 seconds before the end of the game. The score was tight duting the whole game, Pecs managed to get the advatange in the first half but Schio reacted well in the third quarter taking the leading and forcing the hosts to make a strong effort to tie the score in the fourth quarter. They finally managed to do it with Dalma Ivanyi's three-pointer at 35 seconds remaining, just before Laura Macchi killed them.

In their meeting with Spartak Moscow Reg. Brno managed to resist to the defending champion only in the first quarter as Spartak started to build their advantage early in the second quarter and increased it quarter after quarter thanks to a better rebounding performance and better shooting average. The match-up between Fenerbahce and Lotos Gdynia was another revenge-game as these opponents met in one of the quarter finals of the last Euroleague season. Once again, Fenerbahce won at home thanks to a very good effort in the first three quarters. Indeed, Gdynia reacted too late in the fourth quarter where they inlficted on the hosts 12-22. Gdynia showed good aggressiveness towards the basket but Fenerbahce showed more efficiency in their shooting.

What a suspenseful game between Tarbes and Szeviep it was! After a very balanced first quarter Tarbes thought they have done the most difficult part of the job by getting an advantage of 14pts at the end of the third quarter. But Szeviep showed another face in the final 10 minutes and were really close to stealing the victory. Tarbes could have avoid this very suspenseful end if they had a better free-throws performance as they missed 10 out of 20 attempted.

Despite a better start, Bourges didn't manage to resist to Prague who really made the difference with a good scoring effort in the second quarter (19-28). In group B the match between Gospic and Villeneuve finished in favor of the latter 73 - 59. Despite a better start made by Gospic, Villeneuve reacted quiclky and took over the game in the second and third quarters thanks to a very collective effort, better aggressiveness and better shooting average. Gospic presented a good battle in the key grabbing 10 offensive rebounds.

The other match-up of group B had Halcon Avenida in opposition to Wisla Can Parck. It was Jose Hernandez's come back on Salamanca's court but this time as a visitor because after he drove Salamanca to their first final four last season, he joined Krakow for new experience. And this new experience started well as Krakow defeated Salamanca on their home court after a very bouncing game where the leading swung from one side to another. Salamanca had a better rebounding performance but Krakow showed more consistence in shooting.

Euroleague started... Group A

In group A of the Euroleague competition Vilnius had a deserving fight against one of the Russian giants and one of the favorites - UMMC Ekaterinburg. Even though Vilnius lost, they offered good resistance in the first and third quarters but unfortunately for them, totally collapsed in the final ten minutes where they scored only 6pts. UMMC showed better consistence in their game and were controlling the situation from the beginning to the end.

The other match-up of group A of the Euroleague was between Taranto and Galatassaray. Taranto didn't manage to get their revange of the last Eurocup final, being defeated once again on Galatasaray's home court. The first half was clearly at the advantage of the hosts who almost got a 20pts lead at the half time. Taranto had a very good effort coming back from the locker room but they couldn't continue it in the last quarter and didn't manage to tie the score.

Rybnik defeated at home

Energa Torun keep their fourth place in the standings by defeating Rybnik at home 76-74. As the score shows, the game was very competitive, and the score was tight during 40 minutes. Rybnik had a better start (17-21) but didn't manage to resist to Torun's come back in the second quarter (42-39). Both teams didn't show good efficiency on the free-throws line, as well as behing the arc but the hosts managed to make the difference by better protecting the ball, which allowed them to get a little bit more opportunities to score (59 shots attempted for them against 51 for Rybnik).

Struggle to win

Besiktas defeated Pankup 69-64 thanks to a good reaction in the second half. Indeed, Pankup had a better start and still had a 46-51 lead at the end of the thrid quarter. But Besiktas pushed the pace in the fourth quarter, inficting on the visitors 23-13 to walk away with the win. Besiktas had a tremendous rebounding performance grabbing 20 offensive rebounds while Pankup grabbed 8 and also made the difference by stealing many balls on defence. But being less efficient than their opponent really made them struggle to get the win.

Fribourg continue to perform as this time they defeated Helios Basket who still haven't got any victory since the beginning of the season, 82-64. Fribourg set the tone right at the beginning of the game by getting a 10pts lead at the end of the first quarter. They managed to keep it and even increased it in the last ten minutes of the game thanks to a very good stealing performance which allowed them to get easy points on fastbreak.

Riva inflicted on Pully their third loss of the season by defeating them 76-57. Riva showed better aggressiveness and more consistence in their shooting effortm which allowed them to walk away with the win.

First win for Poznan

It was the first win of the season for MUKS Poznan who defeated Artego Bydgoszcz at home 63-54. They managed to get the victory thanks to a very good performance in the second and third quarters as they started the fourth one with a 51-32 lead. This advantage wasn't too much to resist to their opponent's come back in the last ten minutes who inlficted on them 12-22. Poznan were better at provoking fouls and they also outrebounded Bydgoszcz grabbing 42 rebounds (against only 34 for the visitors).

Gorzow: to escape the danger

Gorzow were close to experiencing their first loss of the season when hosting Brzeg as they won only by 2pts 64-62. Although leading from the beginning to the end, Gorzow never managed to move far away from their opponent who were down only by 1pt after a very good effort in the third quarter. Both teams didn't have a good shooting average (29% each) but Gorzow made the difference by getting more points from the free-throws line and outrebounding Brzeg (49 rebounds for the hosts and only 30 for the visitors).

Amazing scoring

What a very prolific game Ceyhan and Istanbul Universitesi showed! Their meeting ended after an overtime with the score 105-99 in favor of Ceyhan. Sierre destroyed Troistorrents at home 80-50 thanks to a terrific scoring effort in the second half. The first quarter was clearly at the advantage of Troistorrents who had a very comfortable lead at the end of it (10-21). But Sierre didn't need a lot of time to get over it as they inflicted on their opponent 21-12 in the second quarter to trim the deficit to 2pts (31-33). They continued the same way in the second half and let Troistorrents score only 17pts.

Napoli hosted Livorno for an important game as both team didn't have any victory since the beginning of the season. After a very competed game, Livorno defeated Napoli 41-63. Still no win for St.Petersburg

Dynamo Kursk defeated at home St.Petersburg 81 - 77. The hosts took the initiative at the very beginning of the match and inflicted 12pts gap on the hosts at the end of the first quarter. Still, St.Petersburg tried to react at the second 10 minutes and almost had success as they managed to reduce the difference up to 5pts. However, this small gap remained fatal for them till the rest of the match as the second half was quite balanced but anyway, at the hosts' advantage. Duel at the peak of the league

Rivas Ecopolis vs Ros Casares was the poster of the week end in the Spanish League as both teams have big ambitions and were undefeated. But the defending champion Ros Casares managed to win the game 56-73 thanks to a better shooting average, better aggressiveness and a better rebounding performance. Both teams were good at avoiding turnovers but Rivas didn't show any aggressiveness at all since they provoked only 13 fouls and shot 1 free-throw. Limoges hosted Armentières, their co-new comer in the first division, for an important match-up to keep some hope not to go down to the second division at the end of the season. Good way

What a great performance Toulouse made! After they defeated Calais on their home court 66-71 they are on the good way to save their skin and stay in the first division next season. Calais had a very good start and had a 25-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. But Toulouse had a good reaction in the second quarter and trimmed the deficit to 1pt at the half time (29-28). The third quarter was quite balanced and Toulouse pushed the pace in the final five minutes to walk away with the win. The visitors had a better shooting average and although the hosts grabbed 11 offensive rebounds, they showed better aggressiveness.

Orenburg: close to the win but...

This week-end Orenburg were hosting Spartak Moscow Reg. and unfortunately for them were defeated by the visitors 66 - 78. It seems that Spartak hasn't yet cooled down from their victory over Galatassaray in the European SuperCup, and their rage definitely helped them to win this time as well. Still, Orenburg really opposed well and even were ahead at the half time. But having come back from the locker room the guests made deserving acceleration and got a very good 14-27 lead at the third quarter. In general, Spartak were quite aggressive as they outrebounded their opponent (they grabbed 15 offensive rebounds) and performed 11 steals. They also showed quite a good game at three-pointers as they scored 9 of the shots.

It was the first game of the season in the Turkish league and Fenerbahce defeated Cankaya Universitesi on their home court 58-80. Vasas-Csata had their first win of the season as they defeated Atomeru-Szekszard at home 86-76 after an overtime. The first half was at the advantage of the hosts as they had a 43-31 lead. But the visitors showed another face in the second half and managed to tie the score at 68 and force an overtime. By defeating Argon Uni Girona, Ros Casares celebrated one year without any loss in the Spanish Championship. The yesterday match between UMMC Ekaterinburg and Vologda finished with no surprise - UMMC defeated the opponent being on a visit in Vologda 65 - 90. Hradec Kralove didn't need time to get over the loss in Brno as they defeated Strakonice at home 68-60. Redemption game of Salamanca

After they were defeated in Rivas, Salamanca had to redeem themselves while hosting the undefeated team of Vigo. Lattes Montpellier were too strong for Nantes Reze who didn't manage to control them at home and were defeated 54-67. Montpellier established control right at the beginning of the game and had a 13-4 lead already after five minutes played. Nantes managed to keep up with them at the end of the second quarter and trimmed the deficit to 5pts at the half time. Unfortunately, Montpellier stunned them in the third quarter by letting them score only 5pts, which allowed the winner to seal the victory. Euroleague winner beat EuroCup winner

Within the SuperCup competition Spartak Moscow Reg. hosted yesterday Galatassaray to fight in the Final. The last season's winner of the Euroleague (Spartak) beat the last season's winner of the EuroCup (Galatassaray) 92 - 59. Spartak took the initiative from the very beginning and really destroyed the opponent already at the half time (50-23). The winner managed to get this win by playing well on defence as well as performing a deserving scoring effort: they were much more prolific in two-point shooting (67% against Galatassaray's 38%) and showed a better result at three-point shooting as they scored 7 three-pointers while their opponent got only 2). Detroit Shock moves to Tulsa

It has been announced that Detroit Shock are relocated to Tulsa. This news wasn't unexpected as the rumor has been running since a couple of months. Due to the economic crisis, the triple WNBA Champion will move to Tulsa and Nolan Richardson will become the new team's general manager and head coach. The new owners Bill Cameron and David Box want to "continue the tradition of success that has been the franchise's hallmark".

Fiba Europe announced that the Polish Club Energa Torun will take the place of Wisla Can Pack Krakow in the Eurocup competition. In their turn, Krakow is the team which was designated to substitute CSKA Moscow in the Euroleague competition.

Montpellier vs Tarbes was the poster of last week end in the French Championship and all the analysts wanted to know if the hosts would be able to inflict on Tarbes their first loss of the season. The answer is no as Tarbes managed to win by two points 73-75. Still, Montpellier boosted by the international player P. Krawczyk, led the most part of the game and ended the third quarter being ahead by 9pts (57-48). But they definitely raised their game in the second half and early moved away from the hosts in the third quarter, allowing them to score only 14pts in the whole half. After they lost to Sesto San Giovanni, Faenza took their revenge by defeating Parma on their home court 67-76. Parma, who are still hampered by many players injured, definitely struggled in this game as Faenza led from the beginning to the end and had a 23-45 lead at the half time. Parma had a better reaction in the final quarter but it was too late. Faenza made the difference by a better aggressiveness, scoring a lot of poitns inside the key and getting 20pts from the free-throws line.

Most awaited game

The game Rivas Ecopolis vs Salamanca was the poster of the Spanish Championship as both teams are the challengers in the Spanish league and all the spectators - those who attended the game in the Arena as well as those who were in front of their tv screens - weren't disappointed. Indeed, Rivas defeated Salamanca 80-71 in an overtime. It was a very bouncing game, Rivas had a better start but Salamanca raised their game in the second quarter and went ahead at the half time. Rivas, led by J.Dubljevic who was absolutely perfect, took the leading again in the third quarter but Salamanca reacted once again in the final ten minutes and tied the score in the last minutes and even got a 3pts leading. Tough meeting with UMMC

Spartak-SHVSM Moscow lost at home to UMMC with a huge score difference 68-114. Anyway, this gap should not be a shock as UMMC is the defending champion of Russia and Spartak is the team which has just arrived to the scene of the first division. In this game UMMC established control at the very beginning and were leading 32-69 already at the half time. They outclassed the hosts in rebounding (26-42) and smothered them by performing a more collective game (with 26ass for them against 12ass of Spartak). Although the number of scored three-pointers were the same at both teams, it was UMMC's two-point scoring which killed the opponent (14/39 for Spartak, 41/63 for UMMC).

Krakow will replace CSKA

After many twists and turns, the club of CSKA Moscow finally vanished and the Fiba Europe invited the Polish team of Wisla Can Pack Krakow to take their place in the Group B of the Euroleague competition. This is good news for Krakow who have big ambitions and whom last season bad results in the Polish league prevented them from qualifying to the Euroleague. Salamanca, who were supposed to host CSKA for the first Euroleague game of the season, will host Krakow and their coach, a certain Jose I. Hernandez, who led Salamanca to the final of the Euroleague last season.

Trutnov stay at the top

Kara Trutnov continue to perform in the Czech Championship as they defeated Val. Brno on their home court 60-73. Though, the win was not easy to get as the score was tight during the most part of the game and Trutnov really made the difference in the last quarter when they inflicted the hosts 7-17. Although Val. Brno attempted a lot of shot (37 attempted for them and 54 for Trutnov), Trutnov showed a better agressiveness and had a better rebounding performance.

The first quarter was very balanced and the teams didn't have a good scoring effort, BA Sparta pushed the pace in the second quarter and were enjoying an advantage of 6pts at the half time. They kept this advance in the third quarter but VS Praha had a strong reaction in the ten last minutes and managed to take the leading when the clock went down. The team of Vologda hosted yesterday the opponent form Orenburg and offered them such a warm reception that allowed the guests to win 58 - 79. As for Orenburg, they immediately took advantage from the mild manner of the hosts and were leading at the half time by 18pts. Sure, it was impossible for Vologda to catch up with the score after. Neither of the team were good at free throws (6/10 for Vologda, 5/8 for Orenburg) but Orenburg were ahead in all the rest sectors of the game, especialy at two-point shooting (63% for them gainst Vologda's 39%), which finally brought them to the victory.

The home team was not very warmly welcoming on the court and defeated the visitors with quite a dramatic gap 87 - 60. Hradec Kralove experienced their second loss of the season being defeated by Karlovy Vary at home 61-77. This win allow Karlovy Vary to climb to 7th place in standings whereas they ranked among the lasts with only one victory. The game was very competed, the hosts had a better start but they didn't managed to keep their advance as the score was 38-38 at the half time. The second half was clearly at the advantage of the visitors and Kralove never managed to raise their game despite a good rebounding performance. Newly back from Ekaterinburg where they played the UMMC Cup, Prague hosted Brno, their Historical opponent, in the Czech Championship. Last season, Prague won the final of the championship against Brno for the first time in more than 10 years. This season, Brno seem to have fully recovered as they defeated Prague on their home court 75-92. The first half was quite balanced but the second one early turned to the advantage of the visitors who showed a better aggressiveness and had a very good rebounding performance. The match between two Russian Dynamos - Dynamo Kursk and Dynamo Moscow - took place yesterday in Kursk and it finished with the win of the hosts over the capital team 77 - 61. Big surprise from Aix

Aix en Provence made surprise as they got their first win of the season against the defending champion and a favorite of the upcoming season, Bourges. Aix defeated them at home 62-56 after a very tight game, led by the hosts from the beginning to the end. Aix en Provence, who used to let their opponents score more than 77pts since the beginning of the season, allowed Bourges to score only 56pts and made them accumulate 20 turnovers. Despite a better aggressiveness, Bourges didn't the find the way to the rim, especially at three-point where they averaged only 7%. This first win is definitely encouraging for Aix en Provence as defeating the champion can add them more self-confidence for the future, whereas for Bourges the situation is quite sensitive, they have to find their mark before the Euroleague starts.

Ros Casares didn't tremble when hosting Hondarribia-Irun since they inflicted on them 87-62 after having led from the beginning to the end. Napoli were unlucky at home

Napoli were the only team who played at home since they hosted this Opening Day but unfortunately it didn't help them to make a good performance as they were defeated by Umbertide 78-54. The first half was quite balanced although Umbertide were ahead the most part of the time and had a 39-30 lead at the half time. They increased their advantage in the second half thanks to a tough defense since they allowed Napoly to score only 24pts in the whoe half. Though, Napoli had a deserving fight in the key and were good at provoking fouls, Umbertide had a better shooting performance and were better at avoiding turnovers.

Venezia outclassed Livorno

Venezia had a comfortable win over Livorno 75-53, though Livorno made them struggle in the second quarter as the score was 31-31 at the half time. But after come back from the locker room Venezia played a better defense as they allowed their opponent to score only 5pts in the third quarter. Venezia outrebounded Livorno (46 grabs fro them and only 25 for Livorno) and also had a better shooting performance.

Tarbes are definitely strong...

Obviously, Tarbes don't make any gift to their opponent as they got one more large victory by defeating Toulouse 94-56. The hosts led from the beginning to the end and outclassed their opponents in many sectors. Indeed they had a better rebounding performance and really made the difference by showing a strong efficiency in their shooting. Armentières smile, Aix en Provence cry...

The beginning of the season is not lucky at all for Aix en Provence as they still don't have any win and this time they lost at home to Armentières 64-70. On the other hand, it's a very good performance for Armentières who just reached the first division. Aix had a good start and ended the first half being ahead by 4pts 37-33. But Armentières pushed the pace in the second half, took the leading in the third quarter and made the hosts struggle. Aix en Provence had a very good rebounding performance grabbing 17 offensive rebounds but they didn't have a good three-point performance (they averaged 7%) whereas Armentières showed a better consistence and a better aggressiveness.

Real Canoe got their first victory...

The first official game in the first division for Real Canoe was their first victory as they defeated Soller after an overtime 67-63. It was a very bouncing game as Real Canoe had a very good start and had a 42-28 lead at the half time. But Soller came back from the locker room with a strong determination and inflicted the hosts 14-28 to reach the overtime. Finally, Real Canoe gave a boost in the final five minutes and got their first victory by being a little bit more efficient than their opponents, though both teams didn't have a good shooting average. Soller can be frustrated as they showed a very good aggressiveness but missed 10 free-throws.

Salamanca's collective win...

Perfumerias Avenida destroyed Argon Uni Girona thanks to a terrific performance in the second quarter where they inflicted on their opponent 26-8. Though, Girona started the game well and were enjoying an advantage of 4pts at the end of the first quarter. But Salamanca's win was a very collective one since seven players scored from 8pts to 14 whereas Girona's scoring effort came mostly from 3 players. Anyway, Salamanca built their victory with a tremendous rebounding performance, grabbing 18 offensive rebounds.

Sesto San Giovanni don't really fit to Faenza and they proved it by defeating them 56-61. Faenza trailed the whole game as Sesto San Giovanni showed more efficiency, more aggressiveness and seemed to be more ready to start the competition. Faenza had many opportunities to stick to the score during the game but they never did it, missing many free-throws and accumulating a lot of turnovers.

Unexpected win of Priolo

Every time the beginning of a season offers us some surprise but this time it was totally unexpected: Priolo defeated Schio 73-65 after they dominated the whole second half. The first half was very balanced and Schio never managed to move away from their opponents, despite many offensive rebounds grabbed. But Priolo had a very good shooting performance, a better aggressiveness and showed a very collective game and managed to capitalize on Schio's mistakes.

Gran Canaria seemed to have been powerless in front of Rivas collective game as they were defeated at home 43-58. The small score showed that both teams didn't have a good shooting average and the team who had the best one won. Rivas set the tone right at the beginning of the game by getting a 8pts lead at the end of the first quarter and Gran Canaria were unable to keep up with them after, despite a good rebounding performance. But the hosts accumulated 24 turnovers while Rivas accumulated only 11.

There is still no win for Limoges and still no loss for Mondeville after their meeting on Limoges' home court. Mondeville really made the difference in the second half. To make a break through in the second half...

Montpellier inflicted a strong loss upon Calais by making the most of the gap in the second half. Indeed, both teams were very close during the whole first half as the score was 32-32 at the half time. Obviously Calais collapsed early in the third quarter and never managed to keep up with the opponent after. Montpellier had a strong aggressiveness and Calais accumulated too many turnovers.

Easy for Taranto to defeat Como

There was no stress for the defending champion, Taranto, in their match with Como as they got their victory quite easily 70-46. Como offered a good resistence in the first quarter and were enjoying a 20-22 lead after 10 minutes played. but Taranto reacted very quickly and estalbished control early in the second quarter. After that Como were unable to keep up with them as they were clearly outrebounded and didn't show a lot of efficiency in their shooting.

The season started...

The first game of the opening day was very spectacular as the teams offered a good battle and showed strong intensity. Pozzuoli showed a great power inside the key and Parma struggled to take the lead in the first half. They finally managed to establish control in the second half thanks to a more collective game and a very good defense. Both teams grabbed a lot of offensive rebounds but Pozzuoli had a very low three-point average and accumulated many turnovers.

The beginning of the season is difficult for Estudiantes as they were defeated at home by Zaragoza 56 - 64. Last season these two teams struggled to stay in the first division. Both teams had a very good rebounding performance but Estuidantes weren't efficient in their shooting, especially in free-throws where they missed 10 shots.

What a very good start of Vigo!

Vigo had a surprising and a very good win over Ibiza on their home court 74-79. Though, the hosts had a better start and had a 41-32 lead at the half time. But Vigo's youth obviously made the difference in the second half as they narrowed the gap in the third quarter and established control in the final one. Ibiza had a very good rebounding performance but Vigo were great at shooting, especially at three-point where they averaged 50%, and also scored 19pts from the free-throws line.

A good beginning is half the battle

A very good start allowed Villeneuve d'Ascq to win over Nantes at home 77 - 72. Indeed, they accumulated an advantage of 10pts at the end of the first half. But Nantes had a good performance in the final quarter and after trailing by 13pts at the end of the third quarter they almost tied the score. Surprising performance of Arras

We knew Arras have been in a good shape since the beginning of the season but we didn't expect them to make such a great performance in the game with Bourges where they won 81 - 84. Bourges had a better start and were stil ahead at the end of the third quarter (59-49); Arras had a terrific finish and despite the fact that two of their players - Amant and Malashenko - had to leave the court for having made five fouls, they managed to get the overtime. Arras had a very good three-point performance, which made the difference; they also made the opponent accumulate 22 turnovers.
