What's up with Krakow?
| |
It's amazing how inconsistent Krakow can be as they are on the roof of Europe in the Euroleague and qualified for the Final Four but in the same time they have been eliminated from the Polish league play-off by Polkowice. However, it's important not to decrease Polkowice's value since they had a great game and established control thanks to a strong acceleration in the second quarter. They also outrebounded Krakow (16 offensive rebounds for them and 10 for Krakow) and had a better 3pts performance.
CCC Polkowice 75 - 66 TS WCP Krakow (13-19, 38-31, 57-49) Polkowice: N.Trafimova (22pts, 8reb), A.Carter (20pts, 14reb), J.Jeziorna (11pts, 6reb, 3ass), M.Babicka (11pts), V.Bortelova (7pts, 3reb, 4ass), S.Bobbitt (2pts, 4reb, 6ass), D.Mieloszynska (2pts, 5reb). Positive note for Armentieres
| |
Armentieres had a very good win on Toulouse home court in the delayed game of last week and they inflicted on the hosts a strong loss 52-80. After they played quite a competitive first quarter, Armentieres moved away from the hosts at the end of the second one and definitely established control in the second half, being a lot more efficient in their shooting effort, especially at 3pts (21pts for them and only 3pts for Toulouse). This win is quite positive for Armentieres since it allows them to get good hopes to stay in the first division next season.

Late reaction of Dynamo was crucial

Dynamo Moscow were defeated at home by St.Petersburg 86 - 92. Actually, the visitors managed to build their win mostly in the first part of the game as they got a 19pts lead at the half tie (36-55). In the second half Dynamo tried to steal the initiative and managed to accelerate their game and reduce the gap. Unfortunately for them, they still couldn/t overtake the margin of the opponent. The winner could boast a terrific game at rebounding (26-49) but they accumulated a lot of turnovers. Their three-point shooting performance was a little better, which helped them to win this game.

Good performance of Calais

Calais managed to reserve a home victory in the match against Challes (72 - 67). Actually, the lead swang from one side to another as the hosts made a good start and performed the first half very well but the visitors breathed down their neck chaising them all the way and even managed to steal control for a while in the third quarter. Still, Calais were better at rebounding and even though they accumulated a lot of turnovers (18), it didn't prevent them from being a little more prolific.

Villeneuve d'Ascq defeated Arras 84 - 61 in quite a spectacular game as the first half was really tight and it was difficult to guesss the winner. Moreover, Arras managed to gain a small lead at the half time and left for a big break with 38-43. But the hosts reacted early in the third quarter to steal the initiative and by making great acceleration managed to increase the gap. Villeneuve were better at rebounding and showed a more collective game, which definitely helped them to gain their victory. They were also more performant at three-point shots (9/19 for them whereas Arras shot 3/14).

UMMC still at the top

UMMC defeated Dynamo Moscow 73 - 53, which was quite expectable, but it seems that Ekaterinburg tried not waste too much energy as 73pts in the game against such an opponent as Dynamo is not ususally a limit for UMMC. Anyway, the hosts never let the visitors to take a breath and even limited their opportunities to score down to 8pts in the first and third quarters. As usual, UMMC performed in two-point shoting and played better at rebounding.

Low scoring of Kursk vs Spartak-SHVSM

| |
The match between Dynamo Kursk and Spartak-SHVSM Moscow was not really prolific as the final score was 63 - 39. The hosts were leadin during all the course of the game and were in such a rage that allowed Spartak to score only 6 and 7pts in the last two quarters respectively. Both teams accumulated a lot of turnovers (18 for Kursk and 23 for Spartak, and Kursk were great at stealing (19st). The hosts scored twice more points at two-point shots but were absolutely unable to score three-pointer as they managed to hit only 1 out 12 shots. As for the guests, it was really problematic for them to score from any distance.

Disappointing loss of Parma

Parma suffered a frustrating loss whereas they really would have needed to win this game against Como in order to breath a little and go up in the standings. Moreover, they lost it in an overtime after Como tighted the score only in the last quarter. Parma really controlled the key grabbing 21 offensive rebounds, but Como were more aggressive and had better overall shooting average.

Being defeated by 15pts on Ros Casares' home court is not a bad performance for Olesa who, after trailing by 14pts at the half time, made a great effort in the third quarter and were down only by 2pts before the final one started. But Ros Casares performed a great finish and demonstrated a tremendous 2pts shooting performance, despite better aggressiveness displayed by Olesa (18FT shot and 12 offensive rebounds grabbed).

Hondarribia are really in danger as they experienced another loss, this time inflicted by Zaragoza, and don't manage to leave the bottom of the standings. Intense, bouncing and competitive game was played by Soller and Cadi since Soller had a better start but Cadi had a great scoring effort in the second quarter and had a 4pts lead at the half time. Cadi resisted well in the second half but Soller managed to force an overtime to walk away with the win. Cadi had a better shooting average, especially at three-point shooting but they accumulated a lot of turnovers (29 for them and 18 for Soller) and couldn't compete with Soller's better aggressiveness.

Vigo didn't manage to keep the 4th place in the standings for too long as this time they lost to Girona. The first half was quite balanced and competitive but Girona made a very good effort in the third quarter (25-16) and definitely established control. Both teams had a very low 3pts shooting average and although Vigo showed better aggressiveness, Girona made a better scoring effort inside the key.

Dynamo: defeating a namesake

The match of two Dynamos - Dynamo Moscow and Dynamo Kursk - took place in Moscow and finished in favor of the guests from Kursk 69 - 80. The game was quite balanced and it was difficult to say who would win as at the half time the score was still tight at 40. The second half was more favourable for Kursk as they managed to gradually build their advantage thanks to a better rebounding performance and more prolific play at free throws and three-point shooting. Still, Moscow can be satisfied with their two-point shooting performance as they gained 14pts more inside the arc. Unfortunately for them, it was not enough...

Ros Casares defeat Salamanca

Ros Casares won the second game against Salamanca and thus got their spot in the final. Actually, their advantage of 24pts gained at the first match already let them much of chance to hope for the victory. On the contrary, in this second game there was more tension as after being led during the most part of the game, Salamanca managed to tie the score at 57 just at 3 minutes before the end of the game. But Ros Casares managed to keep their pressure and won thanks to being more performant at three-point shooting.

Kosice offer good resistance to the giant

Another Russian giant is qualified for the final, UMMC, as they destroyed in the second match their opponent, Kosice 60 -65. Still, Kosice lost with pride as they managed to oppose a very good game to the tough opponent. They didn't retreat in the rebounding battle, didn't accumulate a lot of turnovers and were even ahead at two-point shooting - which is usually UMMC's strong piont. The only weak spot was free throws performance, which, in the end, didn't allow Kosice to win in this game.

Spartak work hard for their qualification

The second match-up Fenerbahce vs Spartak Moscow reg. finished again with the win of the latter but this time the victory was not easy at all as the teams had to procede to an overtime to determine the winner. Consequently, the final score gap was just 2pts (85 - 87). Fenerbahce offered very tough resistance to the Russian team, with a very collective contribution in double figures from five players. Unfortunately for them, it was not enough. MOre disappointing this loss must be for Fenerbahce as they had an advantage after the third quarter, which allowed them to keep hope for moving up to the final. This hope was destroyed by an enormous acceleration of Spartak in the fourth quarter, when they inflicted on the hosts 6-21. Still, Fenerbahce were really aggressive at stealing (14-4) and managed to inflict 21 turnovers on the opponent. On the other hand, they were outrebounded and were less performant at three-point shooting.
Fenerbahce 85 - 87 Spartak Moscow reg. (20-24, 38-34, 67-52, 73-73) Fenerbahce: N.Powell (23pts, 7reb), T.Sutton-Brown (16pts, 5reb), N.Yilmaz (14pts, 7reb), E.Tuncluer (13pts, 5ass), P.Taylor (11pts), B.Vardarli (6pts, 6st), Y.Dalgalar (2pts).
