Teams leaders in Italy

Many surprises happened in Italy last week-end, let's have a look on the best teams' protagonists:
Nuria Martinez clearly showed to her former Club, Famila Wuber Schio, the scope of her talent by driving Sesto San Giovanni to the victory scoring 21pts, corralling 5 rebounds, stealing 5 balls and dishing out 3 assists. On the other side, the best scoring effot came from the most experienced players of the team, Nicole Antibe and Laura Macchi, who had 15pts each.
Napoli still don't win but they enjoyed very good personal performance as Marija Eric was excellent with 20pts and 8 steals and Kristina Vengryte continued her good scoring contribution by adding 12pts, 5reb and 4 steals.
Faenza definitely could count on the Trio Modica (19pts), Erkic (17pts) and Robert (15pts, 9reb) drove by excellent Adriana (12pts and 5ass), to secure their third place in the standings and defeat Pozzuoli.
In Parma, Laura Summerton (25pts), Maria Franchini (11pts) and Ines Ajanovic (8pts, 6reb) allowed Parma the break their losing streak of seven games.

Except for the fact that both teams were very weak at three-point shooting (1 scored for UMMC, 2 scored for Orenburg), in all the rest sectors the game was clearly unbalanced in favor of the visitors. They outrebounded the hosts (41-27), performed 11 steals and inflicted 20 turnovers.

This week-end we are expecting the outcome of the struggle for the Russian Cup. Only four games left to find out the distribution of the first four places among the teams. Let us remind that the semi-final was reached by UMMC Ekaterinburg, Spartak Moscow Reg., Orenburg and Vologda. As for the three first teams, there is no surprise; but as for Vologda, their presence is very intriguing as in the regular championship they are the last in the standings! So, we'll see with great interest how the events will unfold. Tomorrow, the matches of the semi-fanal will take place, within which UMMC will meet with Orenburg and Spartak will try Vologda...

The match when Vologda hosted Spartak-SHVSM Moscow was the match of the outsiders as these teams rank last in the standings. To Vologda's disappointment, they lost at home 50 - 58 and thus change places with Spartak-SHVSM, offering them the last but one place. The game was not very prolific but still was very tight and at the half time it was still difficult to make prognosis about the winner (25-25). But after the big break the visitors managed to make better acceleration and got their victory. Spartak demonstrated a more aggressive game with 14 ass and 13bs, they also inflicted 26 turnovers on Vologda who, nevertheless, could be satisfied with their rebounding performance (43 grabs).

UMMC Ekaterinburg were very close to their first of the season when they hosted Dynamo Kursk. Luckily for them, they managed to keep their pride and defeated the visitors 75 - 72. However, Kursk could boast a deserving performance as they were really close to sefeating the Giant of the Russian league (they were leading after the third quarter 54-62). Only thanks to terrific acceleration made in the final ten minutes UMMC managed to steal the victory. Both teams performed very well and played apace with each other. Spartak Moscow Reg. hosted Orenburg to defeat them 88 - 77. The visitors managed to get the leading at the beginning of the match but Spartak made a good reaction in the second quarter and ruined all the dreams of Orenburg to try the taste of defeating a favorite. No need to say that Spartak's shooting performance was also better. Kocaeli missed a good opportunity...

It was the matchup between the teams from the bottom of the standings since Kocaeli who rank last, hosted Cankaya who rank last but one. It was a good opportunity for Kocaeli to get their first win of the season but unfortunately for them, Cankaya decided differently due to a better performance in the second half. Sopron showed they have big resources and obviously deserve to stay in the competition as they inflicted on the leader of the group, Rivas, their second loss on their home court. It was a very bouncing game where the hosts started better each half but the visitors made a great reaction to walk away with the win. Sopron showed better consistence in their shooting effort and Rivas can be frustrated as they could have won the game if they hadn't miss 11 out of 24 free-throws attemtped. It was a very large win for Florida State over Clemson as they established control early in the game and didn't let any chance to their opponent thanks to being more aggressive and more efficient in their shooting effort. However, Clemson demonstrated a good fight in the key, outrebounding the visitors and grabbing 15 offensive rebounds.

Nobody expected Tarbes to be the team who can make the ultra-favorite Spartak Moscow Region struggle for a win as Tarbes were defeated only by 3pts (75-78). The game between Slovanka and Kralove was very competitive as the score was tight during the whole game but Slovanka, who were down by one point at the end of the third quarter, finally managed to win thanks to a great effort made in the final ten minutes and terrific aggressiveness inside the key (they got 25pts from the free-throws line). Copa de la Reina: Final

What a very tight and competitive Final between the top teams of the Liga it was as Salamanca lost to Ros Casares only by two points (64-62). After a very balanced first quarter, Salamanca managed to go ahead at the half time (32-35), but Ros Casares came back from the locker room with a strong motivation, took the leading in the third quarter and kept it until the end. Salamanca clearly outrebounded their opponent grabbing 17 offensive rebounds, but Ros Casares made the difference by showing more consistence in their shooting effort.

In the first Semi-final there was a surprising domination of Salamanca over Rivas Ecopolis who seemed to be unable to bear the pressure of the game as well as of their opponent. Or maybe, Salamanca were too strong as they established control early in the game and had great performance from all the players everywhere on the court. Rivas Ecopolis 53 - 90 Perfumerias Avenida (13-25, 28-49, 36-68) Rivas: C.Langhorne (12pts, 5reb), C.Joens (10pts), J.Dubljevic (6pts), P.Ujhelyi (6pts, 6reb), A.Cruz (6pts), A.Csaszar (4pts), C.Bermejo (4pts, 3reb), M.Garcia (3pts), E.Eldebrink (2pts). Even though this year St.Petersburg show a better performance it goes without saying they are no match for the giant UMMC. So, the match was won by Ekaterinburg 63 - 91. Ummc got the lead from the first minutes and already at the half time had twice more points than their opponents. St.Petesburg were outclassed in rebounding and could not resist to the collaborative game of UMMC as the latter performed 24ass! Moreover, St.Petersburg could regret their very low effort at free throws (as they got only 4pts from the free throws line).

Stakneviciene/Sliskovic: the winning combination
|
|
|
|
| |
Vigo don't have the best budget of the Liga and nobody expected them to have such good results and rank fifth in the standings. These good performances are definitely made thanks to the very ingenious pair of coaches, Miguel Mendez and Susana Garcia, but also due to the emergence of very talented players such as Egle Stakneviciene and Iva Sliskovic. Iva Sliskovic was already the member of the team last season and showed numerous achievements, but this season she really established herself as the key player of the team, averaging 13.4pts, 8.6reb per game and ranking 6th in the most valuable players of the league. Egle Stakneviciene, ex-Sulciute, is a little bit more known on the International stage since she already made great performances with the Lithuanian National team and played the Euroleague with Vilnius. But this season with Vigo, she really made headway and established herself as the best scorer of Celta Indepo and one of the most prolific players of the league, with 15.3pts and 5.6reb per game. If the "Copa de la Reina" had been organized with eight team, Celta Indepo would have been able to surprise us with this "winning combination".

Some roster changes
|
|
|
|
| |
Many french teams decided to refresh their roster in order to be ready for the second part of the season which promises to be suspenseful: Mondeville recruited playmaker Temeka Johnson who won the WNBA title with Phoenix last summer. Challes hired center Ivanka Matic who was a player of USK Prague and who knows well the French league as she played with Aix en Provence and Mondeville. Rickeviciute and Perovic found an agreement to terminate their contract with Limoges and Basket Landes respectively, whereas Tarbes hired an 11th player, Emma Randball, Australian International player who top scored in the French league last summer with Clermont-Ferrand.
