Many surprises happened in Italy last week-end, let's have a look on the best teams' protagonists:

Nuria Martinez clearly showed to her former Club, Famila Wuber Schio, the scope of her talent by driving Sesto San Giovanni to the victory scoring 21pts, corralling 5 rebounds, stealing 5 balls and dishing out 3 assists. On the other side, the best scoring effot came from the most experienced players of the team, Nicole Antibe and Laura Macchi, who had 15pts each.

Napoli still don't win but they enjoyed very good personal performance as Marija Eric was excellent with 20pts and 8 steals and Kristina Vengryte continued her good scoring contribution by adding 12pts, 5reb and 4 steals.

The final of the Russian Cup was very intense, as it was expected as it was the meeting of the two giants, UMMC and Spartak Moscow reg. UMMC, the leader of the regular championship turned out to be stronger in the Cup, too. They defeated Spartak just by 2pts 77 - 75. Actually, the winner scored their winning points in the first half, whereas Spartak used the second half to pull themselves together and to reduce the deficit. The other Semi-final also finished with a predictable result as UMMC smashed Orenburg 72 - 38. The gap between the forces of the teams was so big that in the first half Ekaterinburg allowed the opponent to score only 15pts! Except for the fact that both teams were very weak at three-point shooting (1 scored for UMMC, 2 scored for Orenburg), in all the rest sectors the game was clearly unbalanced in favor of the visitors. This week-end we are expecting the outcome of the struggle for the Russian Cup. Only four games left to find out the distribution of the first four places among the teams. Let us remind that the semi-final was reached by UMMC Ekaterinburg, Spartak Moscow Reg., Orenburg and Vologda. As for the three first teams, there is no surprise; but as for Vologda, their presence is very intriguing as in the regular championship they are the last in the standings! So, we'll see with great interest how the events will unfold.
Tomorrow, the matches of the semi-fanal will take place, within which UMMC will meet with Orenburg and Spartak will try Vologda...

Short win of St.Petersburg

In comparison to the last season St.Petersburg are really performing as now they defeated at home their neighbour in the standings, Dynamo Kursk. What though the win was short (68 - 67)! But definitely the hosts gained their victory thanks to the performance in the first quarter as they inflicted 26-12 on the guests. St.Petersburg were better at rebounding (42-32), though were frustrating in stealing (10-17). Both teams accumulated a lot of turnovers (23-19).

Pecs totally destroyed the french team of Villeneuve d'Ascq as they really outclassed them the most part of the game and Villeneuve only managed to offer some resistance in the final quarter. Villeneuve didn't score any of the 16 three-point shots attempted whereas Pecs had a very consistent game and they might hope it will help them to get back on the roof of Europe, as they will meet Krakow in eighth-finals.

The match when Vologda hosted Spartak-SHVSM Moscow was the match of the outsiders as these teams rank last in the standings. To Vologda's disappointment, they lost at home 50 - 58 and thus change places with Spartak-SHVSM, offering them the last but one place. The game was not very prolific but still was very tight and at the half time it was still difficult to make prognosis about the winner (25-25). But after the big break the visitors managed to make better acceleration and got their victory. It seemed impossible but Gran Canaria did it! They were defeated by 22pts on Sibenik's home court and they had to win the game by at least 23pts. They even did more: they destroyed Sibenik and sent them back home with a 71-45 loss. Still, the first half was quite balanced and Gran Canaria needed to play a strong defence in the second half to reach the next round. The hosts fought hard everywhere: they provoked a lot of fouls and got 20pts from the free-throws line, they grabbed 18 offensive rebounds and were good at avoiding turnovers.

After they won by few points on Spartak Nogisnk's home court, Montpellier had a better performance at home to advance to the eighth-finals. The first half was quite competitive but Montpellier really pushed the pace at the come back from the locker room and the visitors didn't manage to keep up with them. Montpellier had a tremendous rebouding performance as they grabbed 19 offensive rebounds and also made the difference thanks to a better shooting effort.

Gdynia absolutely needed to defeat Brno to keep good chances to continue the competition and they did it yesterday at home 77-73. But as the final score shows, it was a very suspenseful game. Gdynia, thanks to great acceleration made in the second quarter, managed to get a 48-35 lead at the half time and this advantage wasn't too big to resist to Brno's terrific effort in the third quarter. As usual Brno made a great rebounding performance and grabbed 13 offensive rebounds, but Gdynia showed very good efficiency in their shooting effort.

It was a very bouncing game where the hosts started better each half but the visitors made a great reaction to walk away with the win. Sopron showed better consistence in their shooting effort and Rivas can be frustrated as they could have won the game if they hadn't miss 11 out of 24 free-throws attemtped. Anyway, the last game of the qualifying round next Wednesday will be crucial for Bourges, Prague and Sopron as one of them will have to say goodbye to the competition.

What a great performance of Schio it was when they inflicted on Krakow their first loss of the season 92-88. But Saarlouis pushed the pace in the final ten minutes and made the difference thanks to a better aggressiveness.

But Spartak grabbed more offensive rebounds and were better at avoiding turnovers. Auburn win in overtime

Auburn have been used to play overtimes recently but this time it turned out to be in their favour as they defeated LSU 62-64. After they trailed by 4pts at the half time, LSU made a better scoring effort in the second half to force the overtime. But in the end, Auburn managed to make the difference by being more efficient, especially inside the key.

What a very competitive and bouncing game between Dnipro and Ibiza it was! A game with two overtimes

Stakneviciene/Sliskovic: the winning combination

Vigo don't have the best budget of the Liga and nobody expected them to have such good results and rank fifth in the standings. These good performances are definitely made thanks to the very ingenious pair of coaches, Miguel Mendez and Susana Garcia, but also due to the emergence of very talented players such as Egle Stakneviciene and Iva Sliskovic.
Iva Sliskovic was already the member of the team last season and showed numerous achievements, but this season she really established herself as the key player of the team, averaging 13.4pts, 8.6reb per game and ranking 6th in the most valuable players of the league.
Egle Stakneviciene, ex-Sulciute, is a little bit more known on the International stage since she already made great performances with the Lithuanian National team and played the Euroleague with Vilnius. But this season with Vigo, she really made headway and established herself as the best scorer of Celta Indepo and one of the most prolific players of the league, with 15.3pts and 5.6reb per game.
If the "Copa de la Reina" had been organized with eight team, Celta Indepo would have been able to surprise us with this "winning combination".

K.Vary defeated by VS Praha

Prague's second team, VS Praha, had a very good win at home since they defeated Karlovy Vary 94-66, after they led from the beginning to the end. Praha showed great aggressiveness and made a very consistent shooting performance, which allowed them to accumulate a lot of assists.
